CASSTOWN – The Miami East Vikings won the TRC Wrestling Championship on Saturday with 175.5 team points in what was a very competitive tournament even with several state ranked wrestlers unable to compete.
Without returning state placer Cooper Shore (120) and returning state qualifier Layton Hughes (138), the Vikings were still able to crown three champions; Aaron Mills (144), Hunter Randall (165) and Dustin Winner (285). Finishing runner-up were Bradon Lewis (113), Gabe Cole (120), Gunner Weldy (138), Daniel Martin (150), and Austin Workman (215).
Covington, the 2022 TRC Champions, came up short of repeating. Without returning state placer Jericho Quinter (126), the Buccs still had four wrestlers win individual titles; Michael Hagan (120), Chase Vanderhorst (132), Caleb Ryman (138) and Zeb Woodward-Roeth (215). Returning state qualifier Carson Taylor finished runner-up at 106 pounds.
Milton-Union finished third as a team with 139 team points and Nathan Barker won the 157 pound weight class. Three Bulldog wrestlers finished runner-up to returning state placers, Payton Mayfield (126), Kegan Crow (132) and Trey Kiser (175), while three more also took second; Seth Lowry (144), Ian Coffey (165) and Colton Hultgren (190).
Troy Christian came in fourth as a team with 137 points and had four wrestlers win individual titles; Kyle Schroer (106), Jason Shaffer (126), Connor Havill (175) and Lee Burkett (190). All are ranked high in the state and projected to finish on the podium at the state meet. Seth Ryan (157) finished runner-up for the Eagles.
