The Bethel Lady Bees locked up a least a share of the Three Rivers Conference Championship with a convincing 6-29 win over Two Christian on Monday – the first league championship for the program since 1986.
Bethel must wait until Wednesday to see if it wins the conference outright as Covington hosts Lehman in its season finale. Should Covington lose, Bethel will be the lone team at the top of the standings with a 12-2 conference record.
The game was close early as both teams combined to score just 12 points in the opening frame.
But Bethel broke the game open with 19 points in the second period to take a commanding 27-15 lead at the break.
Behind a game-high 23 points by Karin Calhoun and 21 points from Karley Moore, the Lady Bees continued to pull away as they outscored the Eagles 33-14 in the second half.
In all, Bethel shot 47% by making 24 of 54 attempts from the floor. The Lady Bees were 7 of 14 from behind the three-point line for 50% and make 5 free throws on 13 attempts for 38.5%.
Troy Christian held a slim edge on the boards with 26 rebounds to 25 for Bethel, but the Lady Bees did a better job taking care of the basketball with 16 turnovers to 19 for the Eagles.
