COVINGTON – The Bethel Bees put together a stellar performance on Friday in a 57-0 victory over long-time rival Covington on the Buccs’ home field.
The Bees, who improve to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the TRC, waisted little time to get rolling as it moved the ball deep into Covington territory on their opening possession. Unfortunately, Bethel fumbled at the goal line and the Buccaneers recovered at the one.
But the Bees didn’t let the miscue have an adverse affect as it forced a three-and-out and scored on the first offensive play of the ensuing possession with a 43-yard run by Christian Bennett.
Bethel’s defense was stellar all night, holding Covington to 59 yards of total offense and two first downs.
This put the offense in great field position all night as the Bees scored four more times in the first half for a 35-0 lead at the break.
Lucas Truman scored on a 40-yard run and Braxton Lawson followed with a five-yard touchdown plunge to push the Bethel lead to 21-0 after one.
Freshman quarterback Cooper Mears tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter, one a 16-yard strike to Elijah Schroder and the other a four-yard pass to Lucas Truman.
Mears opened the second half by using his legs instead of his arm as he scampered 28 yards for a score. Braxton Lawson followed with a two-yard run and Ethan Swinehart closed out the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run.
In all, Bethel racked up 13 first downs and 366 yards of total offense. In what was a complete team effort, Bethel spread the ball around a lot as eight different players contributed to the 270 rushing yards accumulated as a team and four players contributed at the receiving end where the Bees accumulated 96 yards on seven completions by Cooper Mears.
It was Bethel’s first win over Covington since 2017 and the Bees look to keep the momentum rolling next week on the road against Lehman Catholic.
