
WEST MILTON – The Covington Buccaneers picked up their first win of the season by holding off Milton-Union in the final inning, 9-8.
Both teams had hot bats as they accounted for a combined 29 hits – 16 by Covington and 13 by Milton-Union.
Jensen Wagoner led Covington with 4 hits in 5 at bats, drove in 2 runs and scored another, while Jake Dilley drove in 3 runs on 3 hits and Kody Nelson drove in 2 runs and score 2 more on 2 hits.
Covington open the game with a four-run inning in the top fo the first as Kody Nelson scores on an error, Jake Dilley connected on an RBI single to score Jensen Wagoner and Trey Schmelzer. Carter Owens finished the inning with an RBI single.
Milton-Union responded in the second by plating two runs on a pair of singles and then tied the score at 4-4 with two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Covington reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth as Tyler Jay scored on a wild pitch and Jake Dilley connected on an RBI single to put the Buccs up 6-4.
The Bulldogs rolled with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to cut the margin 6-5, but Covington had yet another big inning in the top of the fifth.
Kody Nelson’s RBI single scored Carter Owens and Jacob Tipps and Jensen Wagoner doubled to the wall to score Nelson to make the score 9-5 in favor of Covington.
Milton-Union didn’t go down easy as it kept battling to the end. The Bulldogs plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth and put itself in position with another run in the bottom of the seventh, but Covington was able to hold on for the win.
