
WEST MILTON – It was a very cold and windy season opener for three county schools as Milton-Union, Miami East and Covington competed in a quad meet along with Oakwood at Milton-Union High School on Tuesday.
And with several big meets coming up for each program, many of the top athletes didn’t compete in all of the events they will see down the line.
For the Covington girls, Megan Rose and Makayla Vanderhorst tied for second in the pole vault (6ft), while Carlie Besecker finished second in the long jump (14-5.5). Brianna Baker placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (20.54) and Lauren York came in fifth in the long jump (11-5.5).
For the Covington boys, Hayden Barker was the highest placer for the Buccs with a third place finish in the shot put with a toss of 37-11.
The Miami East girls won eight events, while the boys won thirteen events in a quad consisting of the host Milton-Union, Bulldogs, Miami East, Covington and Oakwood.
Taking first for the Miami East girls were Kylie Davie in the 400 meter dash (1:07.64), Kennedy Elifritz in the 800 (2:38.70), Kylee McKinney fun the high jump (4-6), Cora Kinard in the pole vault (7-0), and Annika Paton in the discus (104.6) and the shot put (29-4.25). The Lady Vikings also won three relay events, the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400.
For the boys, Jayden Hatcher won the 100 (12.04), Kaden Weldy won the 200 (24.14), Clark Bennett won the 400 (52.54), Elijah Willmeth won the 800 (2:15.20) and the 1600 (5:07.00), Andrew Crane won the 3200 (11:34.80), Hunter Hawkins won the 110 hurdles (18.74), Josh Amheiser (12-6), Anthony Putnam in the discus (124.0) and the shot put(42-3.25). The Vikings won the 4×200, 4x400and 4×800 relays.
For the host Bulldogs, Jenna Brumbaugh won the 100 meter dahs (14.04), Savanna Smith won the 1600 (5:58.10) and Annie Smith won the long jump (15-5). The boys won the 4×100 relay (48.94) and Ray Copeland won the high jump (17-4.5).
