
CASSTOWN – Covington defeated Miami East 9-8 on Thursday in TRC action as it held off a late Viking charge to preserve the win.
Leading 9-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Miami East scored four runs and had opportunities for a comeback win. Fortunately for the Buccs, they were able to end the rally for their third win of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Vikings scored 2 runs in the second, but Covington responded in the top of the third with a pair of runs of its own to tie the score at 2-2.
The Buccaneers scored 3 runs in the fifth and 2 more in the top of the sixth to push their advantage to 7-2 with Miami East coming to the plate with just six outs to spare.
The Vikings got back into the game by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Covington responded with 2 more runs in the top fo the seventh for a 9-4 lead.
In all, Covington scored 9 runs on 9 hits and had 2 errors in the field, while Miami East plated 8 runs on 6 hits and had 6 errors.
Jensen Wagoner led the Buccs at the plate by going 4-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI and scoring a run. Freshman Tanner Palsgrove scored 3 times at drove in 1 run on 2 hits and a walk, while Kody Nelson had 2 hits and scored twice.
Nelson also picked up the win on the hill for the Buccaneers as Covington used four pitchers, Jensen Wagoner, Kody Nelson, Tyler Jay and Tanner Palsgrove.
