The Miami East Vikings made an impression during their tournament run into the sectional final against Versailles on Saturday at Vandalia-Butler High School.
With a roster consisting of freshen, sophomore and just two juniors, Miami East gave state ranked and once beaten Versailles all it could handle – and then some – before falling by a slim margin, 59-54.
The Vikings took a 15-5 lead after one and maintained the momentum with a 28-19 lead at the break.
Versailles, who improved to 23-1 on the season, came back with a vengeance by outscoring Miami East 16-7 in the third period to tie the score at 35-35.
Miami East hung with Versailles in a back-and-forth final frame, but just couldn’t find a way to hold off the Tigers in the end.
Sophomores Jacob Roeth and Wes Enis had huge games for the Vikings as Roeth led the way with 19 points and Enis scored 17 points.
The Vikings shot 35% from the floor (18-54), made 6 of 15 from behind the arc (40%) and converted on 12 of 14 free throws (86%).
Miami East ends its season at 16-7 and will return its entire roster next season.
