COVINGTON – With the pitch count these days it is difficult for a pitcher to go the distance in high school baseball, making what Tyler Jay accomplished Tuesday in a 3-1 win over Northridge extremely special – especially for a freshman.
Jay went the distance and allowed just one run on two hits in leading Covington to a 3-1 victory over the Polar Bears. He struck out four and walked just one batter, which showed the Buccaneer defense behind Jay was extremely solid. In all, Covington didn’t have one error in the field.
Northridge plated its lone run in the top of the first, but Covington responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Neither team could get much offense going the rest of the way as it became a pitching dual between Jay and Northidge’s Justin Tripplett.
Covington was able to break through with a run in the bottom of the fifth to increase its lead to 3-1, which ultimately became the final score.
Covington connected on seven hits with Trey Schmelzer going 2-for-2 to lead the Buccs. Wagoner had a double to drive in a run and scored twice himself. Jake Dilley, Connor Humphrey and Carter Owens also had hits.
The win improves Covington to 5-8 overall and 5-4 in the TRC.
