TROY- I’ve been the photographer for Troy High School since 2006 and the Trojan baseball team will routinely have “guest players” in the dugout. These were usually JV or freshmen that were potential varsity candidates that wore their jerseys but not full uniforms.

Before a game in the spring of 2019, pitching coach Heath Murray and I were talking and he pointed to two players wearing jerseys from the Troy Junior High baseball team and he said “those two guys could pitch for me right now!”

One of those players was Andrew Helman and Coach Murray knew what he was talking about. To put this into perspective, the following year would have been Helman’s freshman season…2020…but nobody played spring sports that year. In 2021, Helman’s sophomore season was cut short due to injury.

Now we are in 2022 and Andrew Helman is showing the full potential that Heath Murray saw some 3 years ago.

In a must-win game against league rival Tippecanoe, Helman pitched a 7 inning shutout and improved his record to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.0778 with 43 K’s in 30 innings of work.

Tippecanoe starter Matt Salmon pitched well enough to win allowing 7 singles in 6 innings of work.

Connor Hutchinson had the lone RBI for Troy bringing in Eli Donnan who had reached on an error and stole second, moving into scoring position.

Tipp had chances to score in the 5th and 6th innings but Helman was able to get out of both jams and preserve the victory and shut out for the Trojans who improved to an overall record of 13-3 and Tippecanoe is now 12-6.

Troy and Tippecanoe are 1-1 against each other after Tippecanoe won Tuesday MVL league play.
