KETTERING – The Piqua Indians sent two wrestlers to the Division I District Wrestling Tournament at Trent Arena at Kettering Fairmont High School and both wrestlers remained in contention for a possible state birth after the first day of action.
First, at 132 pounds sophomore Max Kaye (27-9) opened the tournament with a dominating 11-2 major decision win over Gage Taggert of Edgewood. Kaye was then within a whisker of advancing to the semifinal round, but came up short in a 6-5 loss to David Gelman of Moeller in the quarterfinals. Next up for Kaye is Adam Clayton of Milford in the consolation rounds.
At 144 pounds senior Andru Hollopeter (39-12), who won a sectional title a week ago, continued his momentum with back-to-back wins to advance to the championship semifinal. He opened with a 14-4 major decision win over Linkyn Schardt of Turpin and followed with an 18-7 major decision win over Sammy Dillon of Talawanda. Next up for Hollopeter is a semifinal match against Eugene Harney of Sycamore. A win will secure a birth at state.
Wrestling resumes at 10:00am tomorrow.
