COVINGTON – Covington coach Dan Cain is adamant about keeping his team sharp for what he hopes is a successful tournament run, which is why he continues scheduling regular season games in place of contests that have been cancelled throughout the season due to the horrible spring weather.
And Monday he was able to lock up a non-league contest against former CCC rival Franklin Monroe where the Lady Buccs were able to work on refining every aspect of their game – regardless of the final score.
Fortunately for Covington, the final score was in its favor as the Lady Buccs captured a 10-4 win to improve to 18-6 on the season with a sectional final contest against Fort Loramie at Newton High School slated for tomorrow (Tuesday).
In the contest, Covington scored a run in the first, five runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to build a 10-1 lead.
With the outcome virtually in hand, Cain went four deep into his pitching rotation and Franklin Monroe was able to score three runs in the seventh to make the game closer than what really transpired in a 10-4 final.
Covington didn’t throw Meg Rogers, its top pitcher in the game, but starter Nigella Reck tossed three solid innings with three strikeouts and allowing just one run.
Karyanne Turner entered in the fourth and struck out two, while allowing just one hit and was replaced by freshman Alexis Hitchcock in the sixth.
Offensively, Covington connected on 14 hits with freshman Taylor Kirker leading the Lady Buccs with 3 hits – one going for a double. Nigella Reck tripled and doubled in the contest for 3 RBI, while Meg Rogers, Karyanne Turner and Maggie Anderson pounded out two hits a piece. Reaghan Lemp, Kamryn Barnes and Mara Newhouse also recorded hits for Covington.
In the grand scheme of things, the only concern for Covington was the fact that it committed two errors in the field and left 10 runners on base.
Still, its was a successful evening for the Lady Buccs because they were able to get in valuable reps for what they hope leads to more games throughout the post-season tournament.
