CASSTOWN – The first year of the Three Rivers Conference has seen some great battles in virtually every sport and Tuesday’s softball game between Milton-Union and host Miami East was yet another one.
The two teams met previously three weeks ago in West Milton with Miami East pulling away for a 14-4 win, but there was no pulling away in this one.
Milton-Union started the game on fire, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Miami East assisted the Lady Bulldogs with some critical errors in the field, but good teams take advantage of mistakes, which Milton-Union did.
Miami East waisted little time responding as it scored two runs in the bottom of the first and then plated another run in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 3-3.
From there the contest became a pitching battled between Kyleigh Kirby of Miami East and Carly Zimmer of Milton-Union. Kirby struck out six batters, while Zimmer struck out five.
Both went the distance in the circle and with the solid defenses providing support, only one more run was scored throughout the remainder of the game.
And that run came in the bottom of the fifth by Miami East, which ultimately became the winning run.
Offensively, Miami East tallied 12 hits and Milton-Union had 6 hits.
For Milton-Union, Jenna Booher and Raegan Fulton had two hits each, while Regan Robinson and Rhi Emmons records hist as well.
Kalli Teeters went 3-for-4 and scored 2 runs to lead Miami East, while Kyleigh Kirby drove in three runs on two hits, one going for a home run.
