CASSTOWN – The weather on Thursday wasn’t ideal, but Miami East was able to overcome the conditions to defeat a determined Lehman team 5-2 on the home field.
The Lady Vikings opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first and then plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Lehman put a huge scare into Miami East by loading the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth as a dazzling rain started. The Lady cavaliers were able to score a run, but Miami East recorded the three huge outs to maintain a 3-2 lead.
“We worked out of a bases loaded with nobody out jam in the fifth,” said Miami East coach Brian Kadel. “To only give up one run there was huge.”
The defensive stops in the fifth ignited the Lady Vikings as they responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth to push their lead to 5-2.
From there, the pitching of Kyleigh Kirby and the defensive performance in support prevented Lehman from getting back into the game.
Kirby went the distance in the circle and helped herself at the late by connecting on two hits on three at bats, one of her hits resulting into an RBI.
Jacqueline Kadel was 2-2 with 3 runs scored, while Reagan Howell and Maddie Maxson both drove in a run each.
But a big concern for Kadel and the Lady Vikings was the eight strikeouts and two errors in the field.
“We need to cut that down,” said Kadel in regards to the strikeouts. “We have a few little things to correct but overall we played well.”
The victory moves Miami East to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the TRC.
