COLUMBUS – The Vikings opened Saturday’s action by winning two of three matches in the quarterfinal as Cooper Shore won an 11-4 decision over Trevor Wilcox of Otstego and Max Shore pinned Gabe Hansen of North Union in 55 seconds. Both advanced to the semifinals, while senior 157 pounder David Davis dropped into the consolation rounds with an 8-2 loss to Connor Smith of Gibsonburg.
Davis returned about an hour later to wrestle Jacob Sharkey of South Range in the second round of consolations. He defeated Sharkey 8-2 to secure his second straight state medal and then followed with a 5-3 win over Dickie Engel (47-8) of Reading in the consolation quarterfinal Saturday evening. He will face Remington Bauer (49-11) of Milan Edison in the consolation semifinal Sunday morning.
In the championship semifinals, Cooper Shore saw his quest at a state championship end in unfortunate fashion as he was disqualified for an illegal throw in a match he was controlling against Kyle Miller of Garaway. Shore, now 28-1 – with an asterisk on his lone defeat – will face Covington’s Jericho Quinter Sunday morning in the consolation semifinal.
Max Shore, who witnessed his younger brother’s misfortune as he was on deck at the same mat, stayed focus on the task at hand in his quest to become a two-time state champion. He thoroughly dominated Carson Cheese of Delta (41-8) by recording a 23-8 technical fall victory to advance to the state title match.
Max, who remained unbeaten at 28-0, will face Wesley Wydick (45-3) of Waynedale in the championship match at 126 on Sunday night.
