
Miami County fielded some extremely talented softball teams in 2022 and as a result many players earned recognition by the Southwest District.
In Division I, Troy’s Abby Welbaum (junior) and Briana Lavender (senior) were chosen honorable mention, was was Piqua junior Caylee Roe.
Welbaum had a 1.322 ERA in 18 games pitched with 125 strikeouts and a 14-1 record. At the plate she had a .365 batting average with 27 hits, 15 runs scored, 8 doubles, 4 home runs and 32 RBI. Lavender batted .529 at the plate with 46 hits, 37 runs scored, 12 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs and 24 RBI.
Caylee Roe of Piqua batted .486 and had 37 hits, 22 runs scored, 8 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs and 39 RBI.
Tippecanoe senior Ashley Aselage earned honorable mention in Division II. She batted .512 on the year with 44 hits, 32 runs scored, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run and 19 RBI.
In Division III, Miami East senior Kyleigh Kirby was a first-team selection as a multi-dimensional player. In the circle Kirby had a 3.528 ERA and a 16-3 record, with 102 strikeouts in 123 innings pitched. At the plate Kirby batted .588 with 47 hits, 41 runs scored, 11 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs and 47 RBI.
Freshman Jaqueline Kadel and senior Kalli Teeters were honorable mention selections for the Vikings as well. Teeters had a .427 batting average with 35 hits, 41 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 home run and 32 RBI, while Kadel batted .494 with 41 hits, 36 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple and 10 RBI.
Bradford, the defending state champions, had two first-team selections and one honorable mention selection in Division IV. The first-team selections were seniors Austy Miller and Nylani Beireis, while Abby Fike was honorable mention.
Miller batted .558 on the year with 48 hits, 47 runs scored, 11 doubles, 9 triples, 8 home runs, 31 RBI and 28 stolen bases. Beireis had a 2.320 ERA in the circle with a 20-4 record and 66 strikeouts in 120.2 innings pitched. She also batted .488 with 42 hits, 25 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs and 37 RBI. Abby Fike had a .366 batting average with 30 hits, 24 runs scored, 7 doubles, 2 triples and 16 RBI.
Covington junior Nigella Reck was a first-team selection in Division IV as well with a batting average of .600, 45 hits, 29 runs scored, 13 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 46 RBI.
Newton freshman Sienna Montgomery was an honorable mention selection in Division IV. She had a .333 batting average with 27 hits, 22 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 11 RBI and 9 stolen bases.
