The sign of a team who improves throughout the year can be gauged by playing the same team twice in a season.
If Tuesday’s 26-23 win for Miami East over West Liberty in the second round of the sectional tournament is any indication, the Lady Vikings are a team on the rise.
Earlier in the year – on November 30th to be accurate – the Lady Vikings fell to 2-3 on the young season with a 34-29 loss to the Tigers of West Liberty-Salem.
Nearly three months later, Miami East ran off 13 wins in 17 games to close the regular season at 15-6 overall and 11-3 in the TRC – good for second in the league.
After a 54-33 win last Thursday over Milton-Union in the opening round of the tournament, Miami East put together one of its most impressive defensive outings of the season on Thursday against West Liberty-Salem – holding the Tigers to just 26 points.
Offensively, Miami East didn’t light up the scoreboard, but had enough balanced scoring to walk away with the win. Six players scored for the Lady Vikings, with Kayly Ftters leading the way with nine points.
In a back-and-forth contest, Miami East fell behind 7-3 after one, but rebounded to tie the score at 12-12 at the break.
The score remainder deadlocked at 21-21 after three, but Miami East was able to hold West Liberty to just two points the rest of the way for the win.
Miami East improves to 17-6 on the season and will play Greenon on Sunday in the sectional final.
