COVINGTON – The Miami East Lady Vikings entered the sectional tournament as the second seed and faced #18 seed Northeastern in the opening round at Covington High School on Saturday.
And it didn’t take long for Miami East to set the tone as it used a pressure defense for much of the first half. The result was a 21-0 lead for the Vikings after one and a 25-0 lead until Northeastern was able to hit a bucket with 5:07 left in the half.
Miami East rotated its entire roster in and out of the lineup throughout the entire game and pushed its lead to 39-7 at the break and 48-10 at the end of the third. Playing under a running clock for much of the second half, Miami East was very patient on offense and cruised to a 53-12 victory.
It was a complete team effort at both ends of the floor and offensively the Vikings shared the basketball extremely well as seven players contributed with points led by junior McKayah Musselman, who tallied a game-high 14 points.
Jacqueline Kadel knocked down three treys for 9 points, while Camryn Francis and Maryn Gross scored 8 points each. Logan Phillips scored 6, Lauren Barnes 5 and Katie Paulus had 3 points.
The victory boosts Miami East’s record to 18-5 as it advances to the second round against #15 seed Carlisle on February 16th at 7:30pm.
