
The Newton girls basketball team captured their second straight tournament win to advance to Saturday’s sectional final against WOAC rival Tri-Village at Trotwood High School.
Last Saturday the Lady Indians opened the tournament with an impressive 47-40 win over neighboring rival Milton-Union to set up Thursday’s matchup against Yellow Springs.
An after falling behind 27-20 at the break, the Lady Indians took complete command of the contest by outscoring Yellow Springs 21-8 in the third to take a 41-35 lead into the final frame.
With the clock and momentum on its side, Newton closed out the contest with an 11-7 scoring advantage in the final 8:00 to secure its ninth win of the season.
Layla VanCulin led the way with 15 points, while Mercedes Craig scored 13 points.
Newton shot 36% from the floor (20-56), 29% from behind the arc (4-14) and 67% from the free throw line (8-12).
Newton will play Tri-Village at 1:00 on Saturday.
