GREENVILLE – Four Miami County programs opened their 2022 seasons by participating in the Greenville Invitational on Thursday at Title Creek with mixed results.
Fourteen teams were on the course and Tippecanoe finished third with 339 strokes, Troy was fifth with 344, Piqua finished 10th with 386 and Covington finished in 11th with 393 strokes.
“We are pretty young.” Tippecanoe coach Aaron Jackson said. “We had three seniors last year, so we basically have two guys with experience. This was a good experience for us and we were really consistent. We are playing in another tournament and will probably have four more faces in there.”
Hayden Hiser led the Red Devils with a mark of 84 strokes in 18 holes of golf. Will Riehle, Eli Voisard and Austin Hiser all shot an 85, while Dylan Lawson finished with 87 strokes and Carson Jackson shot a 90.
Troy had a decent showing as well as the Trojans finished with in the team standings with a mark of 344.
Mitchell Sargent lead the Trojans with a score of 81, while Brayden Schwartz carded an 83. Luke Huber tallied an 89, while Bryce Massingill finished in 91 strokes and Zane Huelsman finished at 97 strokes.
“We have been ready to get started,” said Troy coach Mark Evilsizor. “What we look at is how we stack up with the teams in the league (MVL) and the teams we will face in sectionals. Mitchell had a real nice round for us and our senior Brayden Schwartz played well.”
Piqua finished in 10th place as a team with 386 strokes.
The Indians were led by Richard Price, who carded an 88, and a 93 turned in by Hunter Steinke.
“It is good to get out and play,” Piqua coach Andy Johnson said. “We just have improve with each match and keep getting better.”
Landon Lawson shot a 100, Sabastian Karabinis had a 105, Spencer Ford carded 112 and Drew Hinkle added a 113 for Piqua.
Covington opened its season with a significant amount of golfers who returned with plenty of experience, but the end result for the Buccaneers in the season opener wasn’t what was expected.
The Buccaneers finished in 11th with a team tally of 393 strokes.
“We are better than this,” said Covington coach Bill Wise. “But, this is probably the toughest course we play. I think there were a lot of first tee jitters.”
Bryson Hite and Same Grabmen led the Buccaneers with 96 strokes and Cameron Haines had 100 strokes, while both Connor Humphrey and Hunter Ray carded scores of 101 and Matthew Dieperink tallied a 103.
