
The Piqua Indians will send two wrestlers to the district wrestling meet after one claimed a sectional title and another finished runner-up in the Division I Sectional at Centerville High School on Saturday.
Winning a sectional title for the Indians was 144 pounder Andru Hollopeter (37-12). Hollopeter opened the tournament with a :47 pin of Nathan Wyatt of Troy and followed with a 2:17 pin of Mason Landon of Fairborn. He advanced to the finals with a 4:34 pin of Northmont’s Christian Pendleton and then won his championship bout with a 14-12 decision victory over Griffin Burkle of Centerville.
Punching his ticket to districts with a runner-up finish was Max Kaye at 132 pounds. Kaye (26-8) defeated Braylon Crump of Vandalia-Butler via a 17-2 technical fall in the opening round and then tech called Kaleb Koepp of Tecumseh 15-0 in the quarterfinals. He followed with yet another dominating performance in the semifinal round, defeating Northmont’s Brennan Wilson by major decision 14-4. Unfortunately in his championship match at 132, Kaye dropped a 13-7 decision to Simon Taylor of Centerville.
The Piqua duo will compete in the district tournament on Friday and Saturday at Kettering Fairmont High School with births at state on the line.
