MIAMI EAST – The Miami East Vikings had a strong showing at the OHSWCA District Dual Tournament at Miami East High School on Saturday by advancing to the championship match.
Unfortunately the Vikings came up short of advancing to the regional tournament with a narrow loss to Legacy Christian in the finals.
Miami East opened the tournament with an impressive 56-21 win over Allen East by winning 10 of the 14 weight classes.
The Vikings eared six points in each of the first eight weight classes as Brandon Lewis pinned Aizik Myers in 5:37 and Gabe Cole picked up a forfeit at 113 pounds. Cooper Shore pinned Tyler Sherard in 1:19 and the following four weight classes were won by forfeit by Garrett Fine (126), Gunner Weldy (132), Layton Hughes (138) and Maryn Gross (144). Daniel Martin then pinned Jacob Pinks in 1:35 at 150 pounds.
After Allen East won matches at 157 and 165 pounds, Chris Smith defeated Nick Zellman by default at 175 pounds and Drake Bennett followed a win by the Mustangs at 190 pounds with a 6-4 decision victory over Kaden Culbertson at 215 pounds.
Allen East picked up a victory at 285 pounds to end the dual with the Vikings claiming a 56-21 victory.
Miami East then took on Legacy Christian in the district final in what was a back-and-forth match.
The Vikings won the weight classes at 120, 132, 157, 175, 190 and 285 as Cooper Shore pinned Nathan Attisano in 1:51 at 120 pounds; Gunner Weldy won by forfeit at 132 pounds; John Kemp pinned Jon Jones in 41 seconds at 157 pounds; Chris Smith pinned Jayden Ward in 46 second at 175 pounds,; Drake Bennett defeated Sam Tuck 8-2 at 190 pounds; and Dustin Winner won via forfeit at 285 pounds.
