CASSTOWN – Miami East is peaking down the final stretch of the regular season as it captured the fifth straight win by defeating Covington 11-0 in six innings on Wednesday. The victory avenged an earlier defeat to Covington where the Vikings surrendered five unearned runs in a 6-5 loss.
Neither team could break through until Miami East plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth and then the Vikings pushed their lead to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Vikings then put the game away in the bottom of the sixth by scoring eight runs, the final two coming an a two-run single by Wesley Nidzgorski.
Offensively, the Vikings pounded out 13 hits with Nidzgorksi leading the way with three hits and four RBI. Conor Apple, Layton Hughes and Michael Hohenstein all had two hits, while the other three hits tallied by Miami East came off the bats of Luke Hammaker, Wes Penny and Kaidin Pratt.
Luke Hammaker and Wesley Nidzgorzki combined to throw a two-hitter. Hammaker struck out five and walked two in five innings on the hill, while Nidzgorski recorded three straight outs in the top of the sixth to pick up the save.
Miami East improves its record to 11-6 overall and 7-5 in the TRC.
