TROY – Miami East captured its first win of the season in thrilling fashion on Friday with a 21-14 victory over TRC rival Troy Christian.
Trailing 7-0 late in the third quarter the Vikings recovered an Eagle fumble at the Troy Christian 30. The Vikings took advantage of the turnover with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Dylan Williams on the opening play of the fourth quarter.
Another Troy Christian turnover gave the Vikings the ball deep in Eagle territory and Miami East took advantage again with another one-yard touchdown by Williams for a 14-7 lead with just over three minutes left in the game.
The Eagles responded with a long scoring drive of its own to tie the score at 14-14 at the end of regulation.
Troy Christian won the coin toss and elected to go on defense to start overtime. Miami East was able to grind out yardage on its first overtime possession and eventually scored on another touchdown run by Dylan Williams – his third of the contest.
Leading 21-14, the Vikings made a huge defensive stop as senior Brock Ritchea picked off an Eagle pass in the end zone resulting into a huge celebration by the Vikings in the back of the end zone.
Miami East improves to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the TRC, while Troy Christian drops to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.
